      Mrs. Mary Ellen House Birk, southeast of Allendale, was born on the homestead of A. M. House on June 9, 1859, and has never been out of sight of the old homestead. She was married October 17, 1875 at home to Wm. Birk by Squire Neal and seven children have blessed them, all of whom are living save one, Mrs. Amma Alice King who died last spring in Nebraska. Those living are: Mrs. Cora Ackley, Allendale; Reuben H. Birk, California; Charles A. Birk, Allendale; Oscar Birk, California; Mrs. Walter Mercer, Grant City, and Herbert V. Birk who is at home. Mrs. Birk is in poor health now.

      Mr. Birk was born Nov. 76, 1850 at Kolschausen, Rhine Province of Prussia, Germany, and came to America in the spring of 1866 with his father locating at Sauk Co Baraboo, Wis. Mr. Birk came here in 1874 and clerked for Allison Cure in the Hotel on the Lowry corner all winter. He came to Worth County the same time that E. S. Garver came from Pennsylvania. Mr. Birk located here through the influence of L. J. Farwell, former governor of Wisconsin. He and his son, Herbert, have started a herd of big type Poland China hogs.
