Notes from Mabel Mercer Petranek Wirth (daughter):
Walter Mercer (no middle name) born Jan. 4, 1888 on a farm about 4 miles southeast of Grant City, Missouri. He was the youngest of 4 children, all boys. He died Feb. 4, 1966, 78 years old. He died at the home of his son, Max Mercer, in Abilene, Texas, where he had been living for about 2 years before his death. He had about three strokes before going to Texas to live with Max. He died in his sleep -- probably a stroke.

Walter and Minnie had a beautiful farm home five miles southwest of Grant City, Missouri. All the children were born at the farm. They moved to Rockport, Missouri (around 80 miles west of Grant City) in November 1928 where Walter went into the automobile business -- had the Chevrolet car agency. All children lived there until they were grown. Walter lived there until his illness and Minnie until she became ill.

Biography: Samuel and his four sons moved to a farm which was 4-5 miles southeast of Grant City, Missouri, between 1900 and 1910 where they all purchased individual farms. Walter's farm was 120 acres, 5 miles southwest of Grant City, Missouri. Walter built a house around 1917-1918, where his children were born and where they grew up. Mabel Mercer said the house had plumbing and electricity, which was unusual for that time, and that it was a very lovely home (we have a photo of it). Walter started selling o ff his property and eventually moved to Rockport, Missouri in 1927-28 where he eventually became a sole proprietor of a Chevrolet dealership and after the war he sold used cars also. At one point, he was in business with Leslie King. Source: land records in Grant City searched by Gary Petranek.

BIRTH: No record of birth was found in Ringgold, Union, Adam or Taylor Counties, Iowa. We assume he was born at home as was common at the time.
Marvin Mercer's records indicate he was born near Clearfield, Iowa wh ich is
where Samuel owned a farm. Refer to notes for Samuel Mercer regardin g place
of residence. Birth and death dates were provided by his daughter Mabel Mercer (Petranek) Wirth.

Nov. 2004 Recollections of Mabel Mercer Wirth:
How my parents met: My father was the winner of quite a number of spelling bees in the area where he lived. My mother had been the winner of a spelling bee in the area where she went to schoo. There was a big spelling bee and my father was the winner and my mother was the 2nd winner. So, there were two bright people. I can see the situation of how my father was bright and he was attracted to this bright, pretty girl (he was also a good looking guy, too). The Mercers have always been Methodists, very strong.
My father had blond hair and blue eyes. He went to the country school as a young child. He did go to high school in Grant City for his freshman year. I don't know if he lived with his grandparents when he went to high school, because they were living 4-5 miles from town and it would have been too hard to travel that distance through the snow. His older brothers did not go to high school.
My father was very intelligent. He quit farming when he was in his early 40's. I think he figured that with his brains, he figured he could do better in business than having to farm all by himself. His farm in Missouri did not have good dirt, and he could see that with this poor ground, he would never make good money. My father rented the farm Uncle Elmer's wife's nephew came and farmed the ground for years and did a beautiful job, and my father had income from that. He bought in a Chevrolet car dealership in Rockport, Missouri.
Our home was the second biggest house in the area. It had electricity, which was uncommon then.
