      Birth: Concord Monthly Meeting.

      On one chart:
      "John Townsend, was born at Thornbury Township, Chester (now Delaware) County, in the State of Pennsylvania.
      Joanna England, was born at Burton, upon Trent, in Staffordshire, Old England. They were married at East Nottingham, Caecil (Cecil) County, in the State of Maryland. John Townsend, deceased at his son-in-law, Edward Darlington's, and was interred at Birmingham, Chester County, in the State of Pennsylvania. Joanna Townsend, deceased at her residence in East Bradford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and was intered at Birmingham aforesaid."

      Whereas I John Townsend of the Township of East Bradford in the County of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, being advanced in years and weak in body but of sound disposing mind and memory doth make this my last Will and Testament for the disposal of my worldly property, which Providence hath entrusted me in the manner following–

      Imprimus, My Will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be immediately paid and discharged after my decease by my Executors hereafter named–

      Item. I give and bequeath to my oldest son William Townsend, my desk and bookcase, my largest can and bottles belonging thereto, also the one half of my wearing apparel which is in full sale legacies and bequests whatsoever, he having been advanced by Deed for land in my lifetime-

      Item. I give and desire to my __ son Joseph Townsend all my plantation whereon I now dwell, containing by survey, one hundred and fifty six acres be it more or less to him his heirs and assigns forever, he paying out of the same the sum of two hundred pounds in manner following: fifteen pounds whereof to his sister Margaret the wife of Samuel Jefferies, thirty pounds to my three grandchildren Phebe, Susanna and Martha (daughters of Amos) House, share and share alike, thirty pounds to my grandchildren Martha Joanna Pamela Ann, Sarah & Phebe children of Reuben John & Lydia his wife deceased share and share alike. Forty pounds to his sister Martha the wife of Robert Lamborn. Thirty pounds to his sister Mary the wife of Jese Jones. Fifty pounds to his sister Hannah, the wife of Edward Darlington and the remaining five pounds to my granddaughter Joanna Lamborn the whole of which said two hundred pounds to be paid as before ___ in two years after my decease.

      I also give and bequeath to my said son Joseph Townsend my silver watch the one half of all my wearing apparel and my small can and bottles belonging thereto.

      Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Joanna the wife of Jese Sharples[?] the sum of sixty pounds to be paid in two years after my decease.

      Item. I give and bequeath to my three grandchildren Townsend Lamborn son of Robert and Martha Lamborn & Townsend and Israel John sons of Reuben and Lydia John the sum of five pounds each to be paid to them if they arrive to the age of twenty one years, otherwise to remain as part of my Estate in common.

      Item. I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Joanna Griffith daughter of the said Reuben and Lydia John my feather bed with all the beddings and furniture belonging thereto.

      Item. I give and bequeath to my two sons William and Joseph twenty volumes of the universal history to be equally divided between them, the remainder of my books I order and direct to be equally divided between my five daughters Margaret, Martha, Mary, Hannah & Joanna. Also my will is that all the remainder and residue of my Estate whatsoever to be equally divided between my said five daughters Margaret, Martha, Mary, Hannah and Joanna the same to be equally divided amongst them share and share alike excepting my riding mare which I give and bequeath over and above to my daughter Joanna.

      Lastly I nominate and appoint my two sons William and Joseph Townsend my joint executors, hereby revoking all former wills by me made and declaring this to be my last Will and Testament.

      In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twentieth day of the third month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety eighty 1798. John Townsend.

      Signed sealed, pronounced and declared to be the Last Will and Testamentof the John Townsend in the presence of– the words “daughters of Amos” were intralined before signing.
