    • Name from deed in possession of Gary Petranek - Samuel was a witness to the signing of deed April 1, 1849 William Mercer purchased land in the town of Belmont, Belmont Co., Ohio.

      1827 Enumeration, Wheeling Township: Samuel McKisson (source: Genealogical Records of Belmont County, Volume VII, p. 71).

      In 1830 census, p. 339, he lived in Township, Belmont County Ohio.
      Marriage certificate lists Samuel of Wheeling Township.

      1840 census indicates that a male between 15-20 was living in Samuel's household. We assume this is a brother of his or a boarder or helper.

      1860 census shows him in Union Twp., Belmont Co. (p. 50 of 1860 census index), age 58, farmer; wife, Susan age 56; children: George F. age26?, Sarah 19, Lavina 17.

      1870 Federal census shows him living with George and Catharine in Union Twp, Morristown, Belmont Co., Ohio.

      Several Federal censuses list Samuel as born in Pennsylvania; date calculated from 1850 census showing age as 48.

      We did not find a will for Samuel in Belmont County.

      In the book, Index Belmont County, OH Probate Records, 1802-1990, Vol. 2, we found: McKisson, Samuel, File #05757, Year 1867, File Type = Guardianship. October 2009 trip to Belmont County -- we looked this up and it is NOT this Samuel McKisson. Rachel Foreman was guardian of Samuel M. McKisson, a minor. We have photos of this file.

      1850: pg. 633, line 6: 80 acres of land improved; 47 unimproved; cash value of farm: $2667; 7 horses, 5 milch cows, 6 other cattle, 48 sheep, 20 swine, value of livestock: $484; 125 bu wheat, 400 bu Indian corn, 230 bu oats, 80 lbs wool, 40 lbs Irish potatoes, 200 lbs butter, 6 tons hay, 50 lbs beeswax.

      1860: page 32, line 7: 90 acres of land improved; 37 acres unimproved; cash value of farm: $6300; 3 horses, 4 milch cows, 8 other cattle, 60 sheep, 9 swine, value of livestock $524. Produce during the y ear: 35 bushels wheat; 300 bus Indian corn; 275 bu oats, 2- bu Irish potatoes; 90 bu barley, 100 bu buckwheat, 400 lbs butter, 30 tons hay, 3 bu clover seed, 3 bu grass seed, value of animals slaughtered: $190.

      Discussion with Malcolm McKisson 12/20/2004:
      They were in the lumber business - Susquehanna River; lived near Jacks Mountain near Gettysburg.
      Were in the railroad business going west.
      Some McKissons were in the lumber business in the Case Western Reserve area in the Hennepin, northwest Illinois, area. They were working on the canal there.
      Suggested going to Annapolis to look at land records in MD and PA.
