    • Mabel died about 3:30 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Moody, in Key West, Florida. Mabel had been living with Kathleen for about two years. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease, but a mass had developed between her large and small intestines which caused her death. In lieu of a formal funeral, her children have decided to celebrate her life by inviting all of her children and grandchildren on a cruise (her most favorite activity) in November.

Obituary, written by Kathleen Petranek Moody, August 2010:
Mabel O. Wirth, 95, died August 19, 2010. She was born in Grant City, Mo. on February 2, 1915. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Tarkio College in 1937 with 2 majors in Biology and English. She taught Biology at Sherwood High School in Sandy Springs, Md.

Mabel and her late husband, Dr. Willis Wirth, lived in the Washinton, D. C. area before retiring to Gainesville, FL. in 1984. She was a member of the Methodist Church and President of the Woman's Club. As an expert in flower arranging, she was often a Competition Judge for the Gainesville Garden Club. Friends always admired her collection of original classical art copies. Ballroom dancing with her late husband, Dr. Willis Wirth, and recently with companion Bob Cook was always a passion. She was an avid lover of playing Bridge.

Mabel always looked forward to her many world travels, especially on cruise ships. She always enjoyed the Key West Symphony, The Pops, Impromptu Concerts and the local theaters where she chose the first row as her first choice. Mabel lived a full and wonderful life with friends and family. She will always be remembered for her hospitality and love of others.

She is survived by her 3 children - Stephen L. Petranek of Waterford, Va., Gary L. Petranek of Silver Spring, Md., Kathleen Moody (Dick) of Key West, FL., 3 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
