    • A recent issue of the Daily Free Press (Ventura, Calif.) gave account of the death of L. E. Mercer, whose former home was in the vicinity of Lenox and who moved from here to Ventura in 1884.  Mr Mercer’s birth place is in Ohio where he spent the first ten years of his life.  Moved to Illinois and there made his home until 1874 when he came to Taylor co. and settled on a farm just north of Lenox.  In 1884 he moved to Ventura, Calif. where he has since made his home.  During his stay in the west he has been engaged in the bee business—he and his partner owning a large apiary.  Mr Mercer leaves a wife and four sons, also a brother, Will Mercer of Ottumwa, who is well known to many of the Lenox people.  He was related by marriage to E. E. Rhodenbaugh, whose first wife was a sister of the deceased.

Note from Bill Berg, 9/5/2006: "Marilyn's [Bill's wife] grandmother Crampton was also from there [Henry Co.] Marilyn's Grandmother Crampton married Lemon's son Herbert Bell Mercer. Gr mother's dad knew Lemon and came west to Ventura on his advice. Lemon was quite a person. He left Taylor county and migrated to Ventura County, California in 1881. He went by the name of Eugene. "

Note from Bill Berg, 7/17/2002: "When Lemon or Lemuel got to California with his sons and wife Angie Bell, he reaised bees and was a housing contractor. He did quite well financially, but as the descendants say, "Grandpa Mercer made money, but also spent it." I am searching also for why Lemon, who went by the middle name of Eugene, moved to California in the first place. All of the Mercers were very talented craftsmen."

Note from Bill Berg, 10/21/2009: " Lemon was always on the move and had the reputation of making good money and then finding it all gone, but always able to start over and do well. We always wondered why he and his family came to California and settled in Ventura County. A genealogist suggested that he probably came west as many did to make good money and when the ship arrived in Ventura he got off because he had run out of funds. It makes sense. He did well as a bee keeper and contractor."

William McKee said Lemmon brought his famiy to Ventura, California, about 1883.

Abstracted Newspaper Index compiled by Pat O'Dell, usgenweb.org, Taylor county IA:
From the Taylor County Republican, Sept. 12, 1878:
Next to the Adams County line, on section 5, is the three hundred and twenty acre farm of L.E. Mercer, whom we found busy threshing. He has one hundred and fifty acres of corn, and harvested sixty acres of sheat, and fiftenn of oats. His orchard contains sixty young apple trees, and forty cherry trees. Such small fruits as grapes, crabs, raspberries, strawberries, and all the other kinds raised in this part of the country are abundant. The whole is circled by a strong wind break. The house faces west, with shade trees in front and is 18x20, painted white. Of other out buildings, there are coal house, double corn crib and stable. Mr. Mercer's live stock consist of the following list: twenty-five old and forty young swine, of the Poland China breed, seven head of catle, three work teams, and two colts. He first occupied the place four years ago last spring, and has put it in good shape. It is only one mile north of Lenox and Mr. M. offers it for sale at a bargain and on easy terms.
