    Notes
    • Bio: William Mercer, farmer and stock-raiser, section five, post office Lenox, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1824. Moved with his parents to Belmont County, Ohio, at an early age, and was there educated. He also learned the tailor trade, and worked at that business for 16 years. Moved to Henry County, Illinois, in 1856, where he remained 8 years, tilling the soil and raising stock. He then came to Taylor County, and located on his present farm of 80 acres, wh ich he has improved and made one of the nicest homes in the county . He was married in 1845 to Miss Clarinda McKessen, a native of the Buckeye State (Ohio). From this union there are five children: L.E ., Sam O., Elmira J., wife of E. E. Rhodenbaugh, Ben. G. and William. They are members of the M.E. Church. ["History of Taylor County , Iowa. DesMoines State Historical Company, 1881." Copy of this bio in our William Mercer file]

Middle initial "M" is on William's tombstone as follows: W.M. Mercer, or is W.M. an abbreviation for William?
There is a GAR marker next to Wm's tombstone -- Grand Army of the Republic. There was a post in Bedford named Sedgwick.

Nov. 2009 - Matt Mercer found a WPA Tomstone Project (http://iowawpagraves.org/view.php?id=884784): Wm. G. Mercer, born 1824, died June 15, 1895; cemetery: Old Fairview; location: Lenox; county: Taylor Co., Iowa. This is the first time we've seen a middle initial. Speculation: 1 - either the G is a transcription error; or William's tombstone was replaced and the G was left off - the tombstone looked relatively new - certainly it is not the original from 1895.

1853 Business Directory, Belmont County, Ohio (at Barnesville OH Library):
Mercer, William; Location: Belmont; Type of Business: Tailor and Draper

BIRTH: Birth date of Feb. 14 from family bible in possession of Matthew Mercer.
Also, calculated date from his tombstone (died June 15, 1895, age 71 y, 4 mo, 2 days).

DEATH: The Mercer Family Bible says he was born on Feb. 14, 1824. His tombstone states he was 71 y, 4 mo, 2 days at death - this would coincide with the death date on his tombstone of June 15, 1895.
However, the Mercer family Bible, in possession of Matthew Mercer of Shrewsbury, MA. says he died on May 3, 1897, which is not consistent with the data on the tombstone and his birthdate in the family Bible.

Wm. is buried in Lenox East Cemetery, sharing a tombstone with his wife, Clarinda.

      RELIGION: M.E. (1895 State Census)

Town of Belmont had a mill which produced 30 barrels of flour per day. It also had a coverall and glove factory which employed 60 women and 2- 3 men, one of which was William. (Gary Petranek trip to St. Clairesville Ohio Library 9/95).

William & Clarinda - lived on Michigan St in Lenox in 1895 Iowa Census. 1894 Taylor County Plat book william is still listed as a farmer but says he lives on Michigan St.according to the Plat book Michigan St. is in the middle of Lenox - 3 streets away from section 5 where there is the only 80 acre farm in that section so this says he sold the property and perhaps still worked there [Matt Mercer]?
