      Obituary:
"Mrs. Mercer. A beautiful famiy circle was broken up Friday evening when death summoned Mrs. Margaret H. Mercer, beloved wife of John Mercer, the well known drugggist. Nineteen months ago today she was taken with her fatal illness and it was nineteen months of pain, of fortitude under suffering and heroic trust in the One who orders all things above the heads of mortals. Mrs. Mercer had known physical suffering the greater part of her life, but only those nearest and dearet to her know of the fact, so cheerful and uncomplaining thought of others rather than of herself. Cheerfulness under all circumstances was her prominent characteristic. Her kindness to all persons and all creaturs was a trait noted by all. During her sickness her devoted daughter, Miss Ida, was her constant nurse and though herself a semi-invalid nevr faltered in her attentions. Her husband, although himself sometimes suffering from serious illness, was unremitting in his attentions.
Mrs. Mercer's maiden name was Decker, she was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and came with her parents in Meigs county, this state, and there she grew up and married. She was united in marriage with mr. Mercer in Middleport, forty-eight years ago. They came to Portsmouth forty-seven years ago, Mr. Mercer being then a traveling man for J.F. David, wholesale druggist. Mrs. Mercer was reared in the Methodist faith and joined Bigelow chapel on coming to Portsmouth, and she has ever since been a faithful member, belonging to some of the ladies' societies and doing her share of church work.
Mrs. Mercer loved flowers, plants, children and all things beautiful. She had the artistic temperament which showed itself in the eauty of her home and surroundings. Her home was always a place sought by all.
The only child is Miss Ida Mercer, one of our most popular church and society young ladies. She and her bereaved father are all that is left of a once happy household. A sister of the deceased, Mrs. Jennie Geer, of Middleport, is the only one left of her immediate family. Mrs. Ruby Decker Lawson, wife of Earl Lawson, is a niece, and Miss Marie Decker of Columbus, is another niece. Many will ecall Miss Decker with pleasure. She was part of Mrs. Mercer's household for several years. Mrs. Mercer was fond of young people, and loved to mingle in their pastimes and always seemed like one of them. Even after she was stricken with her fatal illness her youth appeared never to leave her, but kept her young and hopeful to the end. Her sick room was always a cheerful place.
Rev. J. W. Dillon conducted the funeral services at the home, and the burial was in Greenlawn and private."
