    • Jan. 10, 2007 - Phone conversation with Matt Mercer: he found a notebook of his grandfather's, Wiliam Ralph Mercer, that listed his genealogy research. The notebook says William Mercer (married to Clarinda) had brothers David, Daniel, and 2 more. It includes David's descendants. There was a playbill in 1951 where William Ralph attended one of Chester Petranek's performances. There is also a letter from Reba Rose to William Ralph. The research says that David Mercer (William's brother?) came from Washington County Pennsylvania at 17 years of age in 1833, which would have put his birth year at 1816, and he died Feb 1?, 1895 at 78 years old. He lived in Belmont County, Ohio, moved a couple of times and ended up in Portsmouth or Noble Ohio; it lists his children and grandchildren. William and David's info was written in pen; Daniel and 2 other brothers (no names, just spaces) are written in pencil, which leads Matt to believe that the info on William and David was definite while the info in pencil was speculative.

January 2007 - we are making an assumption that William's father is David, as follows:
1840 Federal Census, Union, Belmont, Ohio
      David Mercer
Male: 40-50 (this would put his birth at between 1790-1800 -- with David born in 1816 he could have been in his mid 20's when he was born)
Male: 10-15 -- this could be Daniel or William
Male: 15-20 -- this could be William (born in 1824 - 16 in 1840) or Daniel
Females: 15-20 -- this could the the 2 "blanks" that Matt's grandfather had -- 2 daughters, between William and David.
Female: 50-60 -- could be a wife if she was older than him, or if they were born the same year, she could fall in this category depending on what month the census was taken.

Here's the rationale we sent to Matt Mercer on Jan. 10, 2007:
Re William's father, the following is speculation, but the numbers seem to work. Here's what we're thinking:

The David born in 1816 (who is the one that you found in your grandfather's notebook) is definitely William's brother. This David-1816, could very well be the "second" David Mercer in the 1840 Belmont County census, who is listed as being between 20-30 (he would have been 24 in 1840), and who had 2 females in his household, both of them between 20-30 (one could be his wife and one a sister or a sister-in-law or other relative).

The "first" David Mercer in the 1840 Belmont County Census - the one who lives almost next door to McKisson - could very well be the father of our William and David. Look at the stats:
One Male: 40-50 -- this would put "first" David's birth at between 1790-1800 -- son, David, born in 1816, means that the father David would have been in his mid 20's when he was born)
One Male: 10-15 -- this could be either Daniel or William, (depending on what month the census was taken -- census date for that year was June 1 -- and the ages of the 2 brothers)
One Male: 15-20 -- this could be William, who was born in 1824, which means he was 16 in this census (or it could be Daniel, depending on what month the census was taken)
Two Females: 15-20 -- these could be sisters and possibly the 2 "blanks" that your grandfather had listed
One Female: 50-60 -- could be "first David's" wife if she was older than him, or if they were born the same year, she could fall in this age category depending on what month the census was taken.

We're thinking that David-1816 would have left the household by 1840, which is why he's not listed with David Senior, but has his own household as noted above.
Also, David-1816 has the same first name as his father, which is a clue that he is the eldest son in the family.

Another question is that there is a gap of 8 years beteween the births of David-1816 and William-1824. Could be other kids in between? Maybe a sister? Or maybe a first wife who died and a second marriage?

Also, looking at the McKisson stats for the same census, there is a one female 10-15, which would be Clarinda. Since these two families were neighbors, that's how William & Clarinda got together. Which would further point to David being William's father.

After our trip to Belmont County, Ohio in October 2009, we came to the same conclusion that David is William's father:

      1. In the 1830 census, there is no David Mercer in Belmont County. BUT there are 3 David Mercers in Ohio: one in Columbiana Co, one in Highland Co, and one in Morgan Co. (We disproved the one in Morgan County; he married Elizabeth Smith and Matt found a bio that showed he was not ours). There was a David Mercer going to estate sales in Belmont County from 1815-1825: one in Flushing Twp in 1815; one in 1815/16, one in 1818, and one in 1825 in Morristown. The other 2 David Mercers could be one or both of those going to estate sales. We assume that our David Mercer came to Belmont Co abt 1835, per David Jr's obituary; if that information is correct, then none of these these would not be ours.

      2. 1840 census there are 2 David Mercers that live in Union Twp near Samuel McKisson.

      3. The 2nd David Mercer (we call Jr) and William Mercer's bios both state that both were born in Washington County PA and came to Belmont County in the 1830's; i.e., Wm at an early age and David in 1835.

      4. David Jr's (b. 1817) children: facts would also suggest that his oldest children, Rachel or Thomas would have been born in 1840 after the census was taken, which would support the information that he was married prior to the 1840 census (probably marriage 1839 if they had a child born 1840).

This would also support the fact that the 2 Davids - one father, one the son - moved to Belmont Co in 1835 and David Jr got married prior to the 1840 census.

      5. David Sr (as we call him) information on the 1840 census matches with known information about Wm Mercer's age in 1840 and David moving out.

      6. William grew up in Belmont County and had to have a family. There are no other Mercers in Belmont County that has supporting information of children and their ages. The fact that David lived close to McKisson supports this is a family relationship.

      7. The David Sr by McKisson has evidence to show he is David's father. Whether he is David Jr's father is questionable; however, the fact that David Jr also was born in Washington Co and moved to Belmont in the right timeframe says that David Sr could be his father .

      Speculations:
Will Abstracts, Belmont County, Ohio, Vols. A, B, and C (1810-1827):
A David Mercer attended estate sales: pg. 30 Mar 27, 1815 Flushing; pg 55Sept 15, 1815(6); pg 61Sept 30, 1818, pg. 152 Oct. 6, 1825 Morristown. Don't know if this is one David or several, or who he is.

In same book is an Edward on page 155 - possible brother of David Sr?

Looking in Washington County PA, there is no David Mercer in any census record:

1810 -- John, Margaret, Thomas, Mary, Boyd
1800 -- James, John, Joseph, Thomas, Boyd, William
