William Ralph Mercer's research says that David Mercer came from Washington County Pennsylvania at 17 years of age in 1833, which would have put his birth year at 1816, and he died Feb 1?, 1895 at 78 years old. (notes: to Belmont Oh@17, to Chesterfield, Morgan Co. in 1853, to Racine, Meigs Co. Oh 1859; to Portsmouth in 1895, buried in Racine) He lived in Belmont County, Ohio, moved a couple of times and ended up in Portsmouth or Noble Ohio; it lists his children and grandchildren. William and David's info was written in pen; Daniel and 2 other brothers (no names, just spaces) are written in pencil, which leads Matt to believe that the info on William and David was definite while the info in pencil was speculative.
He compiled a genealogy of the family. Matt has his grandfather's notebook. "When I reviewed the book he had some [names] in pencil and some in pen - once he was sure he transcribed into pen - he has William's brother David in pen. Not only that he had a brother, Daniel in pencil and two other slots with brothers? in pencil. Now since David was in pen he tranced the line. He has David born in Washington Co 1817/16 died 2/1/1891 in Racine. David married Margaret Gorley of Ireland b 1809 died 1/17/1879 buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Racine and died of asthma. They had John Irwin Mercer born 11/10/1843 - Thomas William Mercer - Frances Isabelle Mercer - Rachael Ann Mercer born 12/23/1840. David also remarried to Mary Mallonee on 5/12/1880. David lived in Belmont (says 1833) and moved to several counties (he listed them)." [Source: Matt Mercer email to Gary Petranek, Mar 21, 2009]

OBITUARY: [copy in our files]

David Mercer, since 1882 a respected resident of Scioto county, died at his home on Cemetery hill Friday morning, his death being caused by a complication of diseases. He has been ill for some weeks.
Mr. Mercer was born in Washington County, Pa. in 1817. When he was but eighteen years old he moved to Belmont County, Ohio. From there he moved to Chesterfield, Morgan county, in 1853, remaining there six years, at the end of which time he moved to Racine, Meigs county. He moved from the latter city to Portsmouth in 1822 where he has since resided. He was twice married, his first wife, Margaret Gourley Mercer, dying in Racine in 1879. In 1881 he was married to a widow, names Malenny [or Malonny], who survives him. Three children by his first marriage survive--Dr. John I. Mercer, and Thomas W. Mercer, of this city and Mrs. T. J. Waldever, of Racine."

On June 29 or July 6, 1895, Estate filed in Probate Court - [copy in our files]
March 21, 1896 - Portsmouth Times: "Mary Mercer, admin of David Mercer v. Thomas Mercer, answer and cross petition filed." Ruth Sprowls, a researcher wrote in an email to Matt Mercer dated June 29, 2009: "around June 29 or July 6, 1895, the estate for David Mercer was filed and Mary Mercer was appointed administrator. It seems that around March 21, 1896, that both John I. and Thomas Mercer filed a petition against Mary Mercer to answer questions and cross examine. Seems money was spent without accounting for it. I couldn't locate anything further regarding results. -- Ruth"

About a year ago I transcribed numerous articles on Cuyahoga and Portagecounties, OH, from "Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve"published under the auspices of the Woman's Department of the ClevelandCentennial Commission in 1896, edited by Mrs. Gertrude Van RensselaerWickham. The articles contain many details about the lives of the earlysettlers. NORTHFIELD 1807 - 1850The township of Northfield is about eighteen miles south of Cleveland, and about the same distance from Akron. The name given to the town at an early day was thought to be a very appropriate one, as it was on the extreme north side of Portage County then, and Summit County now. With the Ohio canal and the Valley Railway upon the west, the Cleveland & Pitsburg Railroad upon the east, and the A.B. & C. Electric Railway passing directly through the center of the town, the transportation facilities are all that could be desired.Historians have written that Northfield, for various reasons, was accounted one of the best townships in the Reserve, although not settled at as early a day as some of the neighboring townships. The first white settler was Isaac BACON, a native of Boston, Mass., coming with his family in April 1807, and for three years his was the only white family in town. Mrs. BACON (Nancy CRANMER) was often heard to remark that for six months after their arrival she saw the face of no white woman, save the reflection of her own in some clear pool of water. With this family commences the history of our township.

Early in the thirties, Mrs. Catherine CRONINGER, a widow, much respected in the community, married Robert McKISSON. She had one daughter, Lucinda. The sad circumstances attending her death, on the night of July 24, 1837, are vividly remembered by many. She was the grandmother of Mayor Robert E. McKISSON, of Cleveland.

Mrs. Samuel McKISSON (Susanna SHERRARD) was an early resident here.
